2026-2027 TAEP Program Updates: Massive Changes for Pole Barns and Farm Structures in Tennessee

The Tennessee Agricultural Enhancement Program (TAEP) is back for the 2026-2027 cycle, and this year brings some of the most significant, farmer-friendly updates we’ve seen in years!

If you have been holding off on building a new hay barn, commodity shed, or livestock working structure, this is the year to act. The Tennessee Department of Agriculture has slashed minimum acreage requirements, increased maximum reimbursements, and relaxed building eligibility across several programs.

At Troyer Post Buildings, we specialize in TAEP-approved pole barns. Here is everything you need to know about the 2026-2027 updates, what’s covered, and how to get up to 50% of your new barn paid for.

What is the TAEP?

Established in 2005, the Tennessee Agricultural Enhancement Program (TAEP) provides cost-share dollars to help agricultural producers improve the efficiency, profitability, and safety of their farms.

For farmers looking to build agricultural structures, the program reimburses approved applicants for 50% of eligible expenses up to specific program maximums. This means you can save thousands of dollars on a custom-built pole barn designed specifically for your livestock, hay, or equipment.

Top 5 Changes to the 2026-2027 TAEP Program

Before we dive into the specific building types, here are the overarching changes every Tennessee farmer needs to know before the October 1–7 online application window:

  1. Flat 50% Cost Share: The old 35% cost-share tier is gone. If approved, all applicants now receive a flat 50% cost share up to the program maximum.
  2. Hay Acreage Cut in Half: You now only need 50 acres of hay in production (first cutting only) to qualify for hay storage structures—down from 100 acres.
  3. Barn Additions Are Now Eligible: Under the Hay Storage program, you are no longer restricted to building brand-new, standalone structures. Additions, such as side sheds or extensions to existing barns, are now eligible.
  4. “Farming Solutions” Replaces “Livestock Solutions”: The program has been rebranded to include more agricultural sectors, and the minimum swine requirement dropped drastically from 1,000 head to just 100 head.
  5. Increased Reimbursement Caps: Maximum reimbursements have been increased to $8,000 for Hay Storage and $5,000 for Working Structures.

What Types of Pole Barns Are Covered?

TAEP divides its funding into specific “Producer Programs.” Troyer Post Buildings constructs top-tier pole barns that perfectly align with three primary TAEP categories:

1. Hay Storage Barns

If you are losing hay to weather rot, TAEP will cover 50% of a new hay storage facility (up to $8,000).

  • Livestock/Acreage Minimums: 30 head of cattle, OR 50 head of goats/sheep, OR 50 acres of hay in production.
  • Building Specs: Must have a minimum 14′ eave height and be at least 1,200 sq. ft. At least one side must be completely open.
  • The 2026 Update: In addition to new standalone pole barns, you can now get reimbursed for adding a side shed or extension to an existing hay barn!
2. Permanent Working Structures

A Permanent Working Cover is a roof built specifically to cover a livestock working facility, keeping you, your vet, and your animals out of the weather. This falls under the Working Structures & Fence-line Systems program, which caps at $5,000.

  • Livestock Minimums: 30 head of cattle OR 50 head of goats/sheep.
  • Building Specs: Must be a minimum of 480 sq. ft. with at least a 10′ eave height.
  • Equipment Requirement: To get reimbursed for this specific roof, you must have an alley, a crowding system area, and a head gate/squeeze chute permanently installed underneath it at the time of your reimbursement inspection.
3. Commodity Sheds (Under the Farming Solutions Program)

Need a place to store bulk grains, feed, or equipment? The Farming Solutions program covers commodity sheds up to $6,000.

  • Livestock Minimums: 100 head of cattle, OR 150 head of goats/sheep, OR 100 head of swine. (The swine requirement dropping from 1,000 to 100 is a massive win for smaller producers!)
  • Building Specs: Minimum of 960 sq. ft. Requires concrete floors, at least two bays, 4-foot reinforced interior walls, and an open front.
  • Important Note: Unlike working structures, commodity sheds do not require you to install livestock working equipment (like a head gate or alley) under the roof.

Don’t Forget Fencing!

While we specialize in barns, TAEP has introduced a brand-new Livestock Fencing program for 2026-2027. If you raise cattle, equines, goats, sheep, or swine, you can receive $2.00 per linear foot for permanent perimeter and cross-fencing. Our Material Sales department is now selling eligible fencing materials to qualify.

To qualify for TAEP funding for your pole barn, you must meet the basic eligibility criteria:
